MapTEACH students have traveled to professional conferences to represent exceptional work carried out not only by themselves, but by their classmates, and their schools.
Just like the more experienced geoscientists and geospatial IT specialists they met, the students were engaged in authentic science activities; and their presentations were well-received.

California Geographic Society, Borrego Springs, CA

Two Alaskan eighth-graders were the youngest people to ever present at a conference of the California Geographic Society.
Both students received Certificates of Appreciation and one won at 3rd-place cash award for "Electronic Mapping". They also enjoyed field trips to palm springs and the Salton Sea in the Anza-Borrego Desert.

Four students from the Effie Kokrine Charter School in Fairbanks presented
at the Assoc. of Pacific Coast Geographers
Conference. Their session was Science,
Technology, and Local Landscape Knowledge: Alaskan Middle School
Students Apply GIS to Individualized Mapping Topics.

MapTEACH began as a collaboration between the Alaska Division of Geological &
Geophysical Surveys, the University of Alaska Fairbanks,
and the Environmental Remote Sensing Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
It is now a central component of the
University of Alaska Geography Program (UAGP), K-12 education network.
