2010-2011 Teacher Workshops at the University of Alaska Fairbanks

Teachers at the November 2010 & February 2011 Workshops at UAF were able to:

• Learn to use GPS receivers to navigate on the landscape

• Create unique GIS maps with Mac and PC computers using AEJEE

• Explore the landscape - examine flooding, erosion, permafrost, tree coring and
   local knowledge

• Learn about Alaskan place names and valuable local knowedge

• Practice, review, and evaluate MapTEACH curriculum lessons

• Practice, review, and evaluate MapTEACH Google Earth Lessons

• Leave the class with useful materials specific to their home community in Alaska

During this course, hands-on experiences explore the new, standards-based MapTEACH curriculum, focused on understanding the local landscape and learning to make computer-based maps of scientific, cultural and personal significance. Course includes classroom studies, computer lab, and field work with local landscape experts and geologists.

MapTEACH began as a collaboration between the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, the University of Alaska Fairbanks,
and the Environmental Remote Sensing Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It is now a central component of the
University of Alaska Geography Program (UAGP), K-12 education network.
