ArcExplorer Java Edition for Education (AEJEE) Tutorial
Add ArcSDE Data Layers

Step 1: Download and install ArcExplorer Java Edition for Education and Java 1.4.2 (if necessary) on your machine.   The goal of this exercise is to connect to an ArcSDE instance serving Alaska data layers at the Environmental Remote Sensing Center (ERSC). When you complete this exercise, you will have created a map and project file.

Step 2: Launch ArcExplorer (be patient, sometimes it takes a moment to start).

(shortcut: if you would like to start with a completed version of this exercise, download the "**aee_exercise1.axl" file at the bottom of this exercise and open it from within ArcExplorer)

Step 3: In AEJEE, first select Catalog from the Tools menu, and then open "Add Spatial Database Connection ". (this also can take several moments or even a minute).

This is what the "Catalog" window interface looks like after clicking on the "Catalog" button in the Tools menu.. (larger view).
This is what an empty ArcExplorer project looks like.

Step 4: Expand the "Database Connections " item in the "Data Sources" list and double-click the "Add Spatial Database Connection" item.   ArcExplorer Screenshot 3
Enter connection values (larger view).

Step 5: Enter the following values to establish a connection to the ERSC ArcSDE/Oracle database server:

Server: image.ersc.wisc.edu

Instance: port:5151

Database: [leave blank for Oracle databases]

User Name: guest

Password: guest

Step 6: Click "OK" and with any luck, you are connected! (If you right click on the new connection name and choose New/Sde Locator, you can also bring up a Create New Geocoder window).

ArcExplorer Screenshot 4   Step 7: Select the layer "SDE.AK_Zip_DD" in the first column and then you will be able to drag and drop the Polygon to add zip code areas to your project. Alternatively, you can double-click a layer name to add it to your project.

NOTE: AEJEE does NOT allow you to display rasters, including the Nome DRG and LANDSAT image shown in the Catalog. You can only access raster images via ArcIMS (Internet Map Services).
The "Catalog" interface should look something like this once connected. You can resize the window and change column widths in order to see full names of SDE data layers. By selecting the View menu and Toolbars, you can then check Pan-Zoom to make those tools active for the Preview window.

Step 8: Save your project as "Add_ArcSDE_Data.axl" and then you can quit ArcExplorer but return to your project later.

To download a completed copy of the tutorial project, right-click the link and "save target as..." or "save to disk..." the file (Add_ArcSDE_Data.axl). If you simply left-click on the link, your browser may display the file as XML text. When downloading with Windows IE save as "All files" NOT "XML" or you will get a double extension (.axl.xml). If that happens, simply delete the .xml from the end of the file name before trying to open it in AEJEE.
To open the saved project, first start up AEJEE and then open the saved file.

Your project window should look something like this at the end of this tutorial. The above example added another layer for major roads and marine highways, and then applied a standard Alaska projection.   Optional Step : You can also send your finished project file as an email attachment to someone else with AEJEE. In AEJEE, they can open the axl file and get the same exact map you have, as long as all the data layers in your project are from working ArcSDE and/or ArcIMS servers.
